Lots of press is dedicated to female menopause and its symptoms, but men are often overlooked. After all, men do go through a stage of decline in male hormones and can experience a list of symptoms associated with male menopause (aka andropause), so I thought I’d talk about how new research shows how the herb fenugreek helps relieve male menopause symptoms.
Symptoms of male menopause
Male menopause is characterized by symptoms including hot flashes, breast tenderness, weight gain, lack of libido, mood swings, loss of body hair, sleep problems, and lack of energy—does much of this sound familiar to women readers? Testosterone levels begin to decline around the age of 30 in men, and for some males, that drop in T levels eventually results in male menopause symptoms.
While menopause is commonly discussed among women, for men these symptoms may be confusing or be ignored and hidden, even though there are ways to deal with them effectively. Among the potential helpful natural substances is fenugreek, a culinary and healing herb shown in a recent study to help men manage these andropause issues.
Fenugreek helps male menopause
A recent double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study evaluated the use of Testofen, a seed extract of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) in a group of 120 healthy aging males aged 43 to 70. The treatment group took 600 mg daily of fenugreek for 12 weeks, while the controls took a placebo.
By the end of the study period, men in the fenugreek group showed a significant decline in the Aging Male Symptom (AMS) questionnaire, which looks at symptoms of male menopause, when compared with men in the placebo group. Improvements included
- Better sexual function
- More morning erections
- Increase in frequency of sexual activity
- Rise in both total and free testosterone levels, the latter of which is the biologically active form of the hormone
The authors concluded that fenugreek “is a safe and effective treatment for reducing symptoms of possible androgen deficiency, improves sexual function and increases serum testosterone in healthy middle-aged and older men.”
In a previous study, the impact of Testofen on male libido was explored in double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial involving 60 healthy males (25-52 years) who had normal erectile function. The men took either 600 mg of the fenugreek supplement daily or a placebo for six weeks.
The fenugreek supplement was associated with an overall positive impact, such as a significant increase in sexual arousal and orgasm and an improvement in quality of life regarding well-being, energy, and muscle strength. Testosterone levels stayed within the normal range, and there was no impact on sleep quality or mood.
The results of these studies suggest
fenugreek helps male menopause symptoms
Will taking fenugreek supplements help you or your partner manage andropause? It appears to be worth posing the question to a knowledgeable healthcare provider and trying a reputable fenugreek supplement. What do you have to lose?
